Council Tax (“IMI”)

Who liable to Council Tax (“IMI”)?

The IMI is a local property tax paid by every owner of a property in Portugal to the local council where the property is located. IMI was created in 1st December 2003 by the Portuguese Government and has replaced the old Property Municipal Tax (“Contribuição Autarquica”). The IMI is calculated in relation to the Property Rateable Value (“Valor Patrimonial Tributário” or “VPT”).
